Food for Thought

I’m a Nurse, Solution Focused Life and Stress Management Coach and Entrepreneur.

Kathy Parlevliet, the nurse who knows. One of the biggest challenges of shift working and cafeteria hours, is eating.  We all start out okay.  But there becomes a moment where the internal clock of hunger starts to take over.  Pretty soon after that, you recognize that you need to eat.  Then anxiety begins regarding not enough time to even get to the cafeteria.  Or is you want to order food on the night shift , the restaurants won’t deliver after a certain hour.  During the dayshift , I always ask the nurses if they are having breakfast before lunch?  I want them to be aware that I care.  Everyday the flow of our department affects one nurse more than another.  Being Intune to that is so important.  Even if I can’t help in all their life saving moments.  We need Fuel.  Reminding them that the cafeteria is closing soon.  Or asking when they will be able to take a break.  Food is Fuel.

Recognizing the shift in behavior of the nurses, before and after food.  It is real.  They are better at handling issues.  And focus has shifted.

The Goal is to recognize the window of that needs to be created to eat.  It isn’t easy.  But it is necessary.  Taking time for ourselves is not to be discounted or overlooked.  If you need to change your style, star today.  State, Can I take my breakfast next?  I am hungry.  Maybe bringing your food is helpful.  On night shift I always ate dinner before work. Tried not to confuse myself with routines for my internal balance.  On dayshift, I always bring my food for the entire day.  I don’t want tot worry about the cafeteria.  Just eat when I can.  Usually after the rest of my team.  I want them to know that they come first to me.  Rarely, we order out on dayshift.  Just to expensive and tastes vary.  And I try to bring an afternoon treat.  With some sugar involved.  Twelve-hour shifts are full of unexpected moments.  Sometimes a little sugar can help to get you to the finish line for the day.

Being aware of the things that are so important to your day.  Food is critical.  If you want me to support you more.  TheRNCoach.com
