Vacation Can Speak Volumes

I’m a Nurse, Solution Focused Life and Stress Management Coach and Entrepreneur.

Kathy Parlevliet, the Nurse who knows. The feelings of an upcoming vacation, can be filled with so many great emotions.  Isn’t it what we live for?  The moments of unaccountable time.  Well deserved and precious.

My vacation starts tomorrow.  Having shared with my work family yesterday.  Really no one can hurt me!  No unexpected craziness, or confrontations, can spoil my pre-vacation feelings. I will move through the day with a different kind of awareness.  More peaceful, and joyful.  This is how I always feel.  Recognizing that working is vital to my existence. The excitement of leaving my real world is palpable.

How can we all have moments when it’s not our turn for vacation?  What would happen if you did find a way?  Who else would benefit from your time away?

For myself, I recognized many years ago a need to escape from the real world.  The life and death experiences that we are a part of every day.  Making me see.  Life is short.  Many times, I have been told by senior patients, “Don’t wait!”  Whatever will create a memory for you that brings a smile to your face.

Recognizing that there are many factors that can make a dream moment almost impossible.  We had a group of couples with multiple children.  Camping was our outlet.  Everyone loved it.  And even though it would be a weekend trip.  Everyone felt rejuvenated.  All of these, adult children share beautiful stories with laughter and so many smiles.  The trials and tribulations of sharing.  And playing together.  We shared meals.  We shared watching children. Road trips. We all escaped.

When the feeling of stress is creeping in strong.  What helps you?  At work, if possible, I open curtains to look outside. Touch the glass and feel the temperature outside.  Take a break and walk outside and look up! And breathe.  Your favorite cup of tea or coffee.  Just sipping it and enjoying the flavor. Even closing your eyes for a few moments, and remembering yourself on one of your favorite vacations.   Or even imagining yourself on a future vacation.  Listening to a favorite song.

Each summer, the women in our group would choose a current fun song.  And name it the song of the summer. It somehow always made sense, why that song.  This experience takes me back to summers for years.  The song plays on Pandora or iTunes.  And, immediately I remember.  Life is about the little things.

Think about what can move you forward on a tough day.  What can support you to feel alive again.  Little things can become a solution. And share your feelings.  We are not really alone.  Vacations can’t always be available. So, what can make you feel special?

If you need to explore how to make this happen.  I am here.
