I’m a Nurse. Solution Focused Life and Stress Management Coach and Entrepreneur.
Kathy Parlevliet, the Nurse who Knows. Being quick is a conversation that might suggest that you are super-efficient. If you don’t respond or act quick enough then obviously you are not prepared. Finding this style of nursing around you can bring you to feelings of insecurity. Who gets to decide how you respond to a situation? Are they allowed to judge you? What if the outcome remains the same except you weren’t stressed out?
Watching different approaches to circumstances when I am working, and outcomes has led me to this moment. Is being fast the smartest way to approach every dilemma. Some will say yes, without a doubt.
What happens if you make an error while acting quickly? Wouldn’t it be better to have stepped back and consider all possibilities?
It is remarkable to me, how much information I can find out about a patient in just a few minutes. Multitasking for a quicker outcome. Not recognizing the additional stress that I was projecting. My approach felt correct, lots of information to make a judgement and find a solution appropriate to the issues. Call the doctor, inform him of all the concerns being created and then quickly responding to his orders.
My newer plan is a little slower, taking a few more minutes to absorb what is happening. Asking questions and focusing on more pieces to the puzzle. A more clinical eye, with a better style of communication and less stress. Communicating with the team to problem solve more collectively. Utilizing your resources and creating a plan. This isn’t talking about a Code Blue or any immediate life-threatening emergency. It’s about creating the best possible outcome and solutions with mindful conversations. No outbursts, or inappropriate conversations.
Intelligence and confidence aren’t identified by your quickness. We all doing the best we can. If you are struggling with this area in Nursing, I am here for you. TheRNcoach.com.
